question on weight..

Does anyone know how much weight it adds to the total of a smoothside vs. conventional aluminum siding? Is the filon (?) siding fiberglas? Were there any delam problems with the TT's...? Are they supposed to be shiny or just smooth,as in do you wax them? Janalee

Sunline Fan is an unknown quantity at this point
I think it's around 600-1000# depending on the model, but I'm not 100% sure. Filon is a type of fiberglass, essentially a fiberglass reinforced plastic. They did have a very nice shine to them when new and certainly should be waxed, even though I suspect few did.

Yes, I have seen a number of cases of delam going on. Not always from water, sometimes it's just the glue lets go, but many times it is from water. The filon Sunlines were just filon sheets glued to the wood subframe, so behind the filon it's no different than an aluminum trailer. They weren't vacuum bonded like many brands do now.

If the trailer/roof has been maintained, filon siding is great. If neglected, repairs will be complicated. Good news is though, it won't ever dent/bend, so as long as the filon itself is good, pull it down and glue it back up.

Jon, the 1,000# sounds high, but it may be.

Maybe we can help confirm at least one model to be in the ballpark. The T2499.

My 2004 T2499 had a UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of 4,904# per the weight sticker. That included factory options of a spare tire and four stablizer jacks with aluminum siding.

If HenryJ picks up this note and still has a pic of his T2499 weight sticker we can compare the difference. His smooth sided T2499 was not that different in year/options as ours was other than the SE. Good Ole Bob's T2499 might be close, although he has a 2007. I am trying to think of who else has a T2499 with the SE option that might chime in too?? EMAM’s had many special things but it might be close.

If we can get a T2499 compared, determining other floor plans/model in the 7,000# or 5,500# class of TT would be at least in the neighborhood of weight adder somewhat proportional on the length plus or minus.

As a side line, I "thought" the walk on roof option was like approx 300 to 350# adder and that was 3/8" OSB

John

On the 2499 it added only 200 lb. IIRC, from the weight calculator Sunline had on its website... am I dating myself?? That matched our dry weight which was a tad under 5000 lb. while the Al 2499 was 47-4800 lb.

The shine on fiberglass depends in part on the amount of gel coat in the final layer. If there's a lot of gel coat, like most boats, you can't see the fibers. Visible fibers make the surface and the reflection irregular and less shiny. Sunline--and Arctic Fox too--used a medium grade that aged very well with yearly waxing. We saw some new Rockwoods this summer that are really smooth and shiny, but remember that the really shiny "high end motor home shine" comes from full body paint and automotive clear coat, not a better grade of fiberglass.

As John mentioned I also own a fiberglass sheathed 2007 2499. Mine also has a factory installed walk-on roof. I think I still have the weight sticker...do we need me to dig it out or have we reach a comfortable understanding already?

Let me know...

Bob
