Meteor Showers & Camping

Not that this has anything to do with Sunlines, but I thought some of you might find it interesting.

Last month, Cindy and I were camping in Dead Horse Ranch State Park just outside of Sedona, Arizona. The star display was amazing and I was trying to capture some of the show on film, well Digital Film, but capture it anyhow.

The first image I thought I was a tad out of focus, but if you notice the lettering on the coach is crisp, I realized its just that I left the shutter open long enough that I captured the stars moving. They move so fast, that this really only needs to be left open for around 30 seconds or more.

So I had posted this shot on a Photo Forum that I frequent when I'm not on here, and one of the photogrpahers mentioned that in a few days there was going to be the peak of the Leonid meteor shower and if I went out after midnight, I might see a few meteors.

Cindy and I stayed out for a few hours from 2am till around 5am and counted over 44 meteors streaking across the sky. It was really cool for us to witness and I was told a few years back, the show was so good that you could see hundreds in that amount of time, but I was really happy with what we did see.

In this shot, you can see how bright the stars were and even get a good idea of how bright the milky way was!

Then in this shot you'll notice that the stars towards the left of the picture are in focus, but the stars on the right side are real blurry. I guess the North Star doesnt move all that much and the left side of the image was closer to the North Star. The farther away from the north Star I get, the faster the stars are moving and the blurryer (If thats a word) they become.

Then after hundreds of pictures, this was the only one where I caught a shooting star in one of the images. It's not all that great of a shot, but I was excited to finally catch one.

If I could post it larger, you'd get a better idea of how cool the shooting star looks. Feel free to PM me and I'll email it to you full size if this intrests you.

Just thought I'd share a bit of my facination with photography and what we do all night long. This is also why many days we dont get on the road to move to our next destination till late in the afternoon. When we're sitting out looking at the stars till the sun comes up, it's hard to wake up early

Happy Camping
Pat

Pat,
Thank you so much for the photos. I like the first one. Would the shadow on the coach by General's ad be you standing there by the tripod? Just beautiful, "starry, starry night".

Hey Jay, great eye on the shadow part!!

Of course it wasnt that bright while I was taking the photo, so I was really surprised when I dowloaded it and saw my shadow.

THe shadow came from a light above the bathrooms across the campground that was about 200 yards away, and I thought would have no affect on the image. But it was a very long exposure so I guess every lumen of light comes into play.

Glad you like them. Long exposures at night is one of my favorite hobbies because you never know what you're going to get

Pat

Those are some really nice pic's. Thanks for sharing

And that area in AZ is very nice too. We have a plant outside of Phoenix and I snuck up one weekend to see the big hole in the ground in the northern part of AZ. WOW. Breathtaking. I wanted to grab my backpack and head out on a hike. Have you been there yet?

Oh, those nice pics sure are not doing my camping withdrawal a lot of good.....

Take care

John

Hey John, we havent headed up to that big hole in the ground yet, it's still too cold inthat part of the state, and we know we want to spend a few weeks there minimum, so we're holding off till it warms up a bit.

Thanks for the comments on the photos.

Those are beautiful pictures. Don't know how I missed seeing them the first time they were posted! I also am jealous. Steve had a month off work and we camped and traveled for 3 weeks of it. It's SO hard to go back to being tied to the house/job after only 3 weeks of a taste of the camper life. Pat & Cindy...enjoy your travels, stay safe, and try to figure out a way to just keep on traveling forever

Pam & Steve, that's what our full time job is right now....Just trying to figure out how to never go back to a 9 to 5 lifestyle.

I agree 100% with the comment you made about once you get the bug, it's like going into a deep depression when you have to go back to the real world.

Now that we've been on the road this long, I honestly dont know if I'd ever be able to go back. I'd rather live the life of a gypsy over holding value to anything materialistic again.

I've said it before and I'll stand and preach to anyone who would listen. Once you get started selling and getting rid of things that you think are needed, you realize how little you actually use everything and see 90% of it isnt needed to be happy.

Thanks for the kudo's, and hope to see you on the road soon

Pat

Two thoughts:

One, like someone else suggested, please post you camera equipment!

Secondly, during my work travels, I have tried to build a nice collection of photos, and I am now uploading them to Flickr. I wished I had your talent: (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjranchik/)

So, I think when/if you you finish your US tour, I suggest you move on to other countries, start with Canada, then maybe Europe?

That should keep you going for at least 5years.

Thanks for the replies Mark, It would be too long of a post to list our camera gear, but you can check it out here.

www.everymilesamemory.com/photo_gear.htm

For the most part, we use two D-SLR's and a flurry of lenses depending on what the scene calls for. As Murphy's Law always comes into play, no matter how many lenses you have, you never have the one you need at the right time. Or at least this is what I always tell Cindy

Take Care, and I'll try and keep posting pictures

Emam,
If you look closely at the lower right quarter of the first picture, it looks like you did catch two small meteors streaking through. There are two faint white streaks.
Nice photos, thanks for sharing.

40 Acre Mule, I have looked at that image a few times and agree, I think I caught something traveling through the cosmos

Glad everyone else noticed it. I thought it was just me and I had too much to drink
