Mattress Source - Short Queen

Hi All,
Starting to get our new 2007 T-289SR ready for a spring launch. The short queen sized mattress that came with it is a couple years old and as hard as a rock. It's beyond firm! I've done some searches and suppliers of short queen mattresses are all over the place with price and material type. Any recommendations of where to look? Is a gel pad or pillow top pad a viable option. We both like the middle of the road firmness, somewhere between firm and cushioned..
I know it's camping, but why not be comfortable!!
thanks for any help
Phil & Aggie

A few options.

1. The Original Mattress Factory has made RV mattresses before. They do not seem to list one in NJ, but have several in PA. They have them here in Ohio as well. See here https://www.originalmattress.com/cus...pring/overview

2. See this thread for 2 more manufactures. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...ess-10343.html

3. While costly, it can be a solution to a real bad sleeping situation in your camper. Select Comfort makes a Sleep Number bed for your camper. Camping World use to be the only one that sold them, but now there are other places selling the RV sizes. Camping World has them on sale now. Here is one style, they have more. DreamAire RV Bed, Short Queen - Sleep Number DARV-5/0-SH-WFQ1 - Bed Pads & Mattresses - Camping World. If you are wanting to go this way, ask some more questions on radius or sq corners.

PPL Motor Homes also sells the Select Comfort and other standard RV mattresses. Search - PPL Motor Homes

4. Memory foam on top of an existing mattress. Yes, this does work and we have done this before. It works well, BUT it has to have a mattress that is still good. If the mattress it just plain shot with no support then the memory foam will not be very good as it there is no good support under it. We bought our memory foam here. They cost more but the warranty you get and the quality and density of the foam is night and day over the ones found in less expensive stores.

Even if you do not buy from them, the education of memory foam from their site is useful. The Memory Foam Specialists

We had a hard time with the sleeping issues over the years. We started with the higher quality Sunline RV mattress when we bought our first new camper back in 2003. While I say higher quality RV mattress, they were, but it was still and RV mattress. (There are worse ones...) That slept OK for a very short time. Then came the first memory foam topper from Healthy Foundations. We started with the 2" memory foam. WOW what a difference. It worked well on the hard Sunline mattress.

That 2" worked for about 3 to 5 years then back issues started again.... Now inject the 3" memory foam on the same RV mattress. OK this helped again but only lasted so long. About 3 years I think. The wife likes mush and I like firm due to lower back issues. You cannot get those 2 worlds in an older RV mattress no matter what you put on top.

We made it to the point the wife was sore to shot from sleeping and so was I. Camping almost stopped due to the really bad sleeping. Can't have that.... we like camping too much!!! After much debate, we bought a Select Comfort air mattress and put our 3" memory foam on top. This solved the issue. The wife can have mush and I can have firm. The wife now sleeps better in the camper then in the house and we have a Select Comfort in the house too.

There are many options for a better sleep in the camper. The question you need to come to grips with is, how much camping will you do and how much is a good nights sleep worth in your situation?

Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out. Many have gone through this same issue and the older you get the worse the problem. The more options folks have, the better as there is no one size fits all.

John

Thanks John!
We agree fully with the comfort factor. Enjoyment would diminish quickly without a good nights sleep. I've been down that road before.
The tags on the existing mattress show a date of 2015. The mattress looks like new, but you can likely bounce quarters off it! At this point in our lives, bottom line is that comfort trumps cost.

I'll check out the links you provided and report back once we make a decision.

btw...we pick the Sunline up next Tuesday. It looks like we're leaning toward a springtime drop at a campground at the Jersey shore near Wildwood. Would likely spend the summer there and then decide whether to move it and where to move it to?? It looks like a nice place from what we could see. It's family owned and we met the 2 couples who run it. All seem like real nice folks...good eye contact and firm handshakes. Anyway the campground is about 10 minutes from where we keep a small center console fishing boat which is great.

We went to Majic Sleeper Mattress Factory in Pottstown, PA. IF you want a memory foam mattress they will cut it to RV size for you. We bought one that was a brand name queen size in their showroom, and they cut it down to short queen for us. you cant tell that they took the cloth cover off, cut it and renewed the cover....or however they did it. Best part....no charge for that service! That was in 2012. We had to make the trip back a week later to pick it up, but it was well worth it.

One other solution is to move to a standard size bed. This only works if there's enough space at the foot of the bed to accommodate the longer mattress. We were able to do this in our Cougar so we're sleeping on a mattress of the same quality and support as our mattress at home.

I just placed a file in the Sunline Guides and Tips section of the FILES area documenting how I extended the bed platform to handle a standard length bed.

Thanks CraneFL!

Update,
Was out with the wife today and had to pick up some items at Sam's Club. Anyways, they had a Serta Queen I believe was a pillow top gel hybrid. It had a $100 off the original price of $400, so we can get it for $300. We tried out the sample and the firmness and pillowtop felt pretty close to what we sleep on at home. We both sleep pretty well considering a bad back and other ortho ailments. It's 79 &1/2" long, just an inch and a half longer than the short. Since I haven't taken possession of the Sunline, I'm waiting for exact measurements to see if it might work. I would consider Steve Collins extension if it doesn't interfere with the sliding door.

My bad on the measurements. The overhang of the Serta we test drove @ Sam's is
4 1/2" not an inch and a half. The short queen is 75"....lesson learned!

Phil,

Just throwing this out there, since you used the term,
Quote:

Using a good 3" memory foam topper of the right density on that firm mattress will help. Since the mattress itself if structurally intact and very good, just hard as a brick... the memory foam has a chance of being a good solution.

Just throwing it out for thought consideration.

Thanks John,
We're open to all ideas....we pondered using memory foam as a possible solution. Then we got sidetracked somehow with spread of "reviews" from the greatest to the worst. Our research came to a screeching halt. The wife and I agree to wait until next Tuesday when we pick up our Sunline before we pull the trigger on anything. We'll be able to revisit our original assessment of the mattress. Yes we did like the Serta since we sleep on a similar mattress and were able to test the fit. Over the weekend we plan to visit as many mattress stores as possible and hopefully check out a memory foam topper. Not sure if retail stores carry them, but it's worth a try. The mattress currently onboard is really in mint condition. I would not be surprised if the previous owner just removed the plastic! Our goal would be to salvage the installed mattress if at all possible, however good restful sleep is mission critical!!

As always, we welcome your input and advice.

Phil

After further review, the winner by decision is the -

Serta PerfecTemp 3'' Gel Memory Foam Deep-Pocket Mattress Topper
2175877_ALT.jpg

We measured the current mattress which is 73X60 with approximately a foot clearance between the end of the bed and the sliding door. A 7" overhang of the full queen mattress would be too much to try to navigate. Besides my foot size is 14 so that would be dangerous in close quarters. The Serta PerfecTemp is 80x60, so we plan to use an electric knife to trim off the extra 7". If that doesn't work, we've had foam cut at one of the local fabric stores.

My wife had Kohl's cash, and other coupons, so the Serta Topper became the best choice from a fit and cost standpoint. It also helps that there's a brick & mortar store about 5 miles from us. If this doesn't work, we're considering a 3foot addition to the rear bedroom!! ......only kidding

Thanks to everyone who replied for taking the time to share your ideas and thoughts. All the info we received was helpful in making our decision.

Gee Phil, you even got free counting sheep!!!

It for sure will help the situation. After you get a few night sleep on it, report back your findings. We all learn from this!

John,
We'll be glad to share our learning, experience, & pics. We're bringing the Sunline home next Tue afternoon. My wife estimates that the topper will arrive mid week. We'll have plenty of time to inspect, outfit , and cut and install the new mattress topper. We may have to sleep in it parked in the backyard to collect necessary scientific data for the field report,,

mattress update - pics

Attachment 4064Due to heavy rain and downed trees littering the property, we decided to push the pick up a couple days to be on the safe side. This is our first travel trailer so we wanted as many things in our favor as possible. As an aside it's more that we imagined. My wife is as excited as I am!!

Back to what we decided to do to resolve the rock like firmness of the stock mattress. We had the full sized queen Serta gel memory foam on hand ready to be cut down to a short queen. The pics below show some of the steps we followed to shorten the topper. We also added a new wrinkle to help facilitate a good nights sleep - a Serta Oversized Pillow Top mattress pad. The set up has potential for us to sleep late with an occasional afternoon nap!
The whole job took about 15 minutes. Most of the time was spent double measuring and trying to square the edge. Gel foam appears to be great for sleep, but its pliable characteristics required wifely assistance to keep the edge from collapsing while cutting. The pillow top mattress pad fit nicely over the gel memory foam an the existing mattress. Overall my wife and I believe it has potential and seems to have solved the overly firm mattress problem. Proof will be when we hit the road for the maiden voyage.
We'll update this post once we have a few nights under our belts....

Phil,

Thanks for reporting back. Looks like you have a real good option there. Keep those sheep rounded up so there is no counting going on....

Have a great maiden trip!

Looks good Phil! I need to do something like this with my mattress. My only fear is that it could get very warm.

Sunline Fan,
Thanks! We're hoping the pillow top cover will provide the needed air circulation. I'll update findings once we have a couple nights sleep under our belts.

I tried to talk Aggie, my wife into sleep-over in the backyard. Sometimes I question her sense of adventure!!
