Keeping the 1950

Well this is an interesting situation. For various reasons, we have decided to keep the 1950 and not purchase the 2499. I know, sounds crazy doesn't it???

As the snow got deeper and deeper here causing us to postpone settlement week after week, we both started to question our decision despite talking to our car dealer about beefing up the springs on the Expedition to make towing better for us. The final decision was made yesterday and we contacted Stoltzfus.

A big influence was how easily the 1950 is towed by the Expedition and able to carry anything we want to load in either the TT or the TV. A plus is the 1950 is totally clean and shining as we prepared it for the trade in.

So you will see us at Buttonwood in site 67 with our 1950.

In a time when everything and everyone is downsizing, it's good to see you saving money and fuel by sticking with what you already have.

Think of all that money you both saved and can now spend it on logging camping miles once the snow melts!!!

Win - Win!!

Finances certainly were part of the decision as both of us would like to retire in a couple of years. Somehow taking the money out of the bank started to feel less and less like the right thing to do. And if we had been unhappy towing the 2499 with the Expedition, a new tow vehicle would have been needed. Having done that once, we were not eager to repeat that scenario.

We've been retired for 9 years traveling about in our RVs and would say the fun of it all is not at all related to the size of our Rvs. Certainly the 262 square feet of living space in our Bounder is more comfortable than the 84 feet of our Sunline but it doesn't seem to really matter.

It's all fun. Each rig has it's own benefits. Obviously your two choices have a much smaller size difference. We find the 1950 to be the ideal rig and I suspect that our next rig will be very much like it.

Every change requires a readjustment and carries a cost. Very often the cost of change is not worth the incremental cost. For you it's not simply the cost of a new trailer but possibly also the cost of a new tow vehicle.

To me the key joy enhancer is escapeing the working world and finding the boundless world of RVing, of sharing the everyday vision of RVing freedom, the boundless feeling of stress free living.

Safe travels,

We've been to many RV shows since we bought our T-1950. We're not in the market for a new one but just curious as to what's out there today. There are many nice rigs today but we always leave with the same thoughts. The T-1950 is perfect for two and we couldn't have made a better choice for value, floorplan and craftsmanship and the size is perfect for towing and parking.

The ease of towing the 1950 was a huge influence on our decision to keep it. When towing in the mountains of western MD, ME, NH, VT or NY, it's never been a problem maintaining speed. A little more space and the desire for a queen bed led us to begin the process of moving up but then it just didn't feel right. Live and learn, I guess!!

When we first purchased the our Sunline we had thought we'd only use it for two months for our trip to Labrador. We have now spent 17 of the last 25 months in it.

We had thought the 4 foot wide bed, and ours is only 4 feet wide, would require synchronized sleeping, turning in unison with the other person at night. Actually it's worked out well. Some nights when Nature calls I have to climb over but that's been OK also.

It turns out the bed has been fine, another lesson in possibilities.

The only aspect we wish we had is a sitting area like the 1950, for ourselves and the occasional guests. I suspect we'll address that in our next trailer.

Of course speed is never an issue with us now that we've retired, unlike when we were both working and it seemed we were always driving too fast.

Now we drive like people even older than ourselves, taking time to enjoy the trip, to discover what lies between here and there, rarely passing anyone else, and feeling a little safer at the reduced speeds and also saving money as we travel more slowly.

I wonder if you might share any small things that you might improve about your 1950 beyond the bed. Of course this is an open invitation to all 1950 owners.

Safe Travels,

We don't have a 1950 but camp frequently with a couple who do. There are only 2 changes she's mentioned....
1. That having a pantry would make organizing the kitchen much easier.
2. That the one shirt closet have shelves in it since it's too short to hang anything in anyway.
I believe that other than that they are in love with it, even after 3 camping seasons.
It is a cleverly efficient little thing!

Thank you for you thoughts.

Conversions of shirt closets is interesting. The Bounder had three and we converted two to shelves since people who travel a lot have little use for shirts. I have two dress shirts for church and one pair of dress pants. Jeans, shorts and casual clothes dominate. When we first started traveling an iron was a must, no longer. We once had a minister who said he didn't care what we wore, he was just happy we wore something.

As to the pantry, the Bounder has one and we've added one to our little Sunline. Pantry's that are not to deep are nice because you can see everything. My goal for the next trailer is a pull out pantry.

Thanks and Safe Travels,

Funny you should mention it. Some stacked wire racks and racks behind the door turned the closet next to thr fridge into a pantry and we have shelves in the closet over the foot of the bed.

Works well.

We also have added wire racks to both closets near the bed/sink and the closet next to the fridge, which is now our "pantry." I use the closet near the sink for my clothes and Pat uses the shelves over the couch for his. We started out using the cupboards over the bed, but it was a pain climbing over the bed to get a change of clothes. Now that section stores extra towels and appliances, pots we rarely use. The size of the fridge is great too, for lots of our food.
