JohnB would have been proud...

While Kitty was getting her Camping World fix today, we listened to one of the employees trying to make a customer "More informed"

They currently own a 2005 Dodge half-ton pickup and want to get into the RV lifestyle. They were telling the CW employee that their Dodge dealer informed them that they could tow up to a 12,000lb trailer!

The guy looked at me and shook his head... We both proceeded to let them know about the various weights they would need to know, to make an informed decision. I also let them know that a 2005 Dodge towing guide would give them a much better idea of what their truck could safely handle.

The CW employee (Rob) was direct and right to the point, about everything they really needed to know.

"Up to" is always the catch-all phrase. Our little 1/2 ton truck is factory spec'd. to tow "up to" 3100#, but ain't no way I'd try to do that to 'er - even before talking to you guys.

Wow, not only do RV dealers lie to make a sale, the truck dealer is giving false info so he can sell a new truck too? Just can't understand these salesmen -- if one tried to sell me a line like that, I would never again buy anything from them. Kudo's to you and Rob at Camping World!

JohnB is on a distinguished road
It is really good to hear Kitty was out and about and especially getting her Camping World fix. Go Kitty go!

Also good to hear CW truly helping someone from getting into a really bad situation. Good for them.

Having enough drive train to "pull" a camper is for sure need. However being able to control a camper under tow is the area that can cause the most danger.

Towing a TT really needs it's own rating. Many TV's have a separate rating for a 5th wheel. The same should apply for a TT. These are not open flat deck trailers, boats even a small enclosed cargo trailer. A long, wide, tall frontal area camper with a heavy tongue weight is a different ball game. All the disclaimers exist in the fine print, however a new person to towing has no idea to even look for them and what they even mean.

Until the industry changes it's ways (not any time soon) we need to continue to do our part as fellow campers to help new folks have an enjoyable and safe experience going camping. Anyone needing help with towing a camper, ask away. We are glad to help.

When we were looking at TTs this summer, on every dealer lot except one, upon hearing what our TV was the salesperson said, "Oh, with that you could tow almost anything on this lot!" (Of course, the salespeople didn't say "safely"... ) With the help of people on this site, we knew better.
