I really hope...

Hello all! Hoping someone here might possibly have just 21" of striping for my 1986 Saturn 1661 door...it's the burgundy ,blue, and red.. or if you may have any singles from repairs of your own, I surely would appreciate it!!
If I ever have luck again on posting pictures, I will share.......Janalee

Has anyone here spray painted the stripes onto the door? If so,what kind of paint did you use on that surface?

Yes, I did. I used Auto spray paint. Same colors as yours, if you look at my albums you can see it. I actually repainted all the striping on the trailer, on three sides.

Our door has a embossed surface. Like little bumps. We painted the door and when we masked to paint the tape didn't stick so good and the stripe had feathering on all edges. Any painting should make sure the tape is stuck down good. Same with decals. If edges are not down good they will dry out faster and break loose.

Hope you can find the decals you need but if you can't maybe some kind of de-glosser will help paint sticking.

Jim and Bev....We have the same kind of door..I am almost certain this will happen..I will try to find tape somewhere..or a crazy decal!!! The whole door should be painted but----enough for this season..exterior goes on hold very soon. Just wish I could figure out how to post a pic of my little room on wheels!!

I took some pics with my phone (a old flip phone) and never did figure out how to transfer them anywhere so quit taking more, LOL!

If I were to try again I would find cans of spray paint since that puts down a thinner layer of paint that "might" not run under the tape. That or a artist brush and a pencil line before using a wider brush to fill between the lines.

There's a new tape on the market called Snot Tape. I saw a display in the paint store and the tape was on 80 grit sandpaper and didn't bleed. Pretty impressive. Like $12 a roll.

Check Walmart, Home Depot, Auto paint store, etc. for Krylon "Fusion" spray paint (auto aisle). I believe it should work very well as it is for many plastics (and other materials) of which some are hard to do well without special paints.

While at the store of your choice buy "painters" masking tape. It is not as aggressive as regular masking tape. Keep in mind you will be masking over the stripe/s that you painted and you don't want to peel that paint off.

De-masking is or can be a timing issue, as to do it to soon, the paint may not separate from the masking tape causing peeling paint from the previous underlying stripe.

One can take an Xacto (or other hobby knife with #24 blade) and lightly score along the tape edge cutting the paint just done. Don't cut deep. The object is to help remove tape and not lift the painted stripe below.

When spraying do your best to spray straight (parallel) to the tape at a distance recommended on the can. About 9". This can help avoid bleeding under tape. Also, keep the coats light (as recommended on the can). This also helps avoid bleeding.

Last, but not least, do your best to move your arm parallel to the stripe being painted. Avoid swinging your arm thru an arch which gives an uneven coverage.

Actually one or two more things. Start on one edge of the door and spray at the 9ish inches away moving parallel as mention with the nozzle depress for the full length. If possible start before the door edge and follow thru running off the opposite door edge.

Do everything that you can to not dwell in one spot. Continuous smooth motion gives the desired results.

Stop and go motion and trying to "spritz" by pressing the nozzle button on and off generally gives undesired results. With this approach combined with being to close as well dwell is a formula for sag of paint.

It is always a good idea to practice these techniques before going for the "gold".

I just can't seem to conclude this!

When masking, We use brown Kraft paper. You aren't likely to that for that project, but the brown shopping bags will work. Just make sure you tape all seams you cut and/or make. Check for any possible holes or tears. If feasible tape them or replace. Even plastic shopping bags can work. The negative with those is the over-spray paint may flack off which isn't a problem in it self, however, it may cause a static charge and flakes of the paint on tape may jump onto your paint job. A pain at the least.

In closing. Mask in a manner that you don't have large undo amount of the tape against your stripe you just painted. On tape of 3/4 inch have about half on the masking material and half on the stripe.

In closing part two. "If possible" when pulling the tape and mask away pull down and away at about 45* angle, not straight back at 90*

Snot tape can work well. It can be a little tricky. We use various degrees of snottiness. Haven't checked it out in any store, thus not sure which it is.

We have the bumpy surface door also, I don't know if it's aluminum or vinyl. I painted the whole door first with almond color spray paint (after removing the striping, most of which was gone anyway). Taped it off using the blue tape, pressing very firmly. I only had one small area of feathering and blurring where the tape wasn't secure enough. Otherwise no problems. I did try the green tape at one point on the side striping and didn't like the results. I had much better luck with the blue name brand painters tape.

I got the almond paint today at Lowes..and the painters tape and as soon as we get a wind free day,I am ready to do it. Unfortunately,we found the door was in very sad shape and in order to save the added expense of a brandnew one my brother had to put three 1" wide metal bands across the door to stabilize it. They are riveted into the aluminum frame to keep the skin inside the frame. It was a very effective fix, door is now opening and closing well and no longer flexing. Not pretty but will probably not be as noticeable after the new paint and some time goes by! By the way, I thought the skin was fiberglass but found it is aluminum coated with vinyl. The good cleaning I gave it revealed that little fact. Lol! Thank you all for the good tips. P. S. I think it just may go stripe free. Janalee

No problem! Just did a copy and paste.

Looks like a nice campground. Not crowded with neighbors. Maybe could use a creek. LOL!
