Great Sight in Northern California

We spent the last few days cruising up HWY 1 along the coast of Northern California. Amazing drive and should be on the top of everyone's list if they're into beautiful scenery and photography!!

Just above Red Wood National Park is an area where these Roosevelt Elk congregate. At first, I wasted half a compact flash card on a bunch of females thinking I need to shoot what I see. Rare to see this many elk out in the early afternoon.

Then we come up on a small field and spotted 6 bull's! Oh Man were we excited.

This is the type of thing to make any outdoorsman go crazy!

If you look close, the bull on the left has a small bird sitting on its butt. These two were about 100' from us and just sat grazing like we werent even there. This is when it's great to have a full walk-on roof. We parked along the road edge, climbed up on the roof of the Sunline and sat watching with a great birds eye view

Just seeing the bulls in the grass, it's hard to tell how big they are. If I would have walked into that field, you probably couldnt have seen me, but then again, I'm only 5'5" . Further up the road, we spotted a herd of females with some young bulls tagging along. That vehicle behind them is a Jeep Cherokee Now you can see how big these monsters are.

Imagine hitting one on the road! This is why when they put the warning signs out for Elk Crossing, we slow down to a crawl

All images shot with a Canon 30D and a 28-300L lens

Lovely pictures and scenery!

I've never made it further North in Cali than just above San Fran but have heard it to be some of the most naturally beautiful mountainous land in the USA.

Wish you could've made it to the Eastern M&G, I'd love to sit around the campfire and chat about photography with you(as well as your adventures traveling around the country). I dabble a little trying to get good shots but my mother owned/operated her own studio for 25 years here in central PA.

Thanks for sharing.

Take care,
Lode

Thanks for the comments guys, I too wish I could be sitting around the fire at Buttonwood with the Sunline Gang.

Yeah, we were a tad bit excited to see these elk. First time we've seen that many, and that close to the road.

Put Northern California on your list of places to visit! Especially traveling up or down HWY 1!! Amazing beauty!
