Exclamation Earthquake in Virginia

Whooooeeee!!!! About 2 p.m. we had a 5.9 shaker roll through my neighborhood. I ran out - the cat ran in. Largest quake since the 1800s. No damage to our home, but the Missus works in a high-rise office building (4th floor, fortunately) and was a tad shook. (pun intended ) Epicenter was near U.S. Rt. 522, south of Mineral, Va. That's a stone's throw from a nuclear power station. All is well, however.

Did it make itself known to y'all Yankees up thar?

Yep in eastern PA...I was sitting by the pool and felt like I was in a vibrating chair for about 30 seconds. The report from our son at work in Radford, VA is that he didn't even notice it.

I was sitting in my bus pre-tripping some of the switches and all of a sudden my air ride seat started to give me a massage. My son came out of his garage and headed towards me hollering "What the He**" was that.

Thats as close to an earthquake as I want to be.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
Reporting in from Central Ohio

I work on the 5th floor (top floor) of our office building. Was on the phone when the 1st little ripples came and didn't even realize it. Then I look out the window at the trees tops (we are in a wooded complex, tress 10 feet from building) and the trees where standing still but the building was moving... What.... Stood up and I swear the floor and window moved 5 feet... by then we know something was up, this isn't right, time to go... The entire building evacuated.

That big wave was the extent of it. Out in the parking lot everyone on a smart phone was surfing the web to see what was up.

15 minutes later back to work... We have a plant in VA, haven't talked to them yet.

The time it hit here was about 1:53 ish pm. Had a 2:00 meeting to call into and called the folks from the parking lot, sorry we are a earthquake drill...call ya later

This was my 1st and hopefully last, quake

Schenectady, NY too. I decided to take a walk outside after the lights started to sway in a GE building built when Tommy (Edison) was still making light bulbs.

I was talking to someone on the phone in a Greenville, SC office who said he felt a quake and 5 seconds later I felt it too. That was spooky.

I heard that people in Boston and Providence felt it. The RI statehouse was evacuated as a precaution. I never felt a thing at home.

Central MD about halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis. Sitting in car waiting for 1400 appointment, felt like sitting in a row boat and catching a passing wake from another boat. A lot of minor damage in Baltimore. Chunks of bricks fell off buildings, one very old stone church lost parts of it's steeple. Fortunately no injuries.

Here in New Hampshire, I didn't feel the earthquake because it happened while I jumped in the air.

It was felt here in Spring Mills, although David and I just got in the car and was headed to Harpers Ferry to visit family. We didn't know anything about it until our Iphones went crazy with tweets, facebook posts, messages and calls... then the cell towers got slammed with calls and cell service was down. Several homes in the area had some minor damage. Now the 3.7 earthquake we had early in the year I was home for that one.

As a corollary: How much confidence do you now have that our communications networks will be of any use in a disaster of any significant magnitude?

None. It's a well known fact in the Emergency Management Community that what public comms systems are still working will be overwhelmed and pretty much useless.

Pretty high actually. A few years ago during a hurricane in Florida, the power and phones were out but the cell phone system still worked. In the 60's while I was a radio operator in the reserves at that time, a hurricane hit the southern tier of New York. By the next day we had established radio links to working phone lines for many communities and long distance radio links throughout the state. Today they do it by satellite uplinks in no time. And then there's the ARRL with a network of amateur radio operators. America takes care of itself pretty well. Few other countries come to our aid as we do others in a disaster.

The only time I experienced the communications being overwhelmed was walking away from the WTC on 9/11 BUT.....within a couple of hours and walk to Greenwich Village, land line phones did work if you were patient and cell phones worked by the time we walked to upper Manhattan.
