Cumberland Island Georgia

If you ever want a great place to go take pictures and stay in the Sunline, there is a barrier island just on the border of Florida and Georgia that is amazing!! We camped in St. Mary's Georgia in this cute little camground right on the St. Mary's River. It only has water and Electric, but has a dumpstation on site. With the summer here, I'd wait till fall before trying to go, as we heard from the park rangers that the mosquito's are horendous in the summer months

Between the old ruins of a giant mansion left on the island by the Carnegie Family, who used to own the island before giving it to the Government, the wild horses that roam freely around the place, armadillos everywhere, wild turkeys wandering down the empty roads, miles of coastline, and deserted white sand roads, it's a photographers dream. Not to mention, a great weekend get away.

One side is lined with a salt marsh that stretches for miles.

The main attraction is the Dungeness Ruins

This is one of the few primitive campgrounds on the island if you do want to camp on the island. There is a huge bed and breakfast on the island, and is the only way to stay overnight on the island unless you plan on tent camping.

This was on the Ferry Ride over to the Island from St. Mary's Georgia. We literally saw dozens of Dolphins playing in the boats wake.

Then the wild horses on the island will walk right up to you to investigate you as much as you will be curious about them.

For the nominal ferry fee and cost of the park entrance fee, I think the whole day cost us $30 and we got hundreds of great photos!!! We plan on going back and kayaking across the salt marsh and tent camping on the island for a few days. One day wasnt enough to see it all. But that'll probably be in the fall after the killer mosquitos have gone away.

Feel free to check out our gallery to see dozens of great shots on the island

Hope you all enjoy the place as much as we did. Here is a link to the history of the Island itself.
