Camping close or far.......

How far from home do most of you camp? Do you usually stay within say 200 miles of home? Do you try new CGs all the time or return to your favorites?

Gosh we can camp anywhere from 1 mile from home (Nick's Lake home of the Adirondack M&G) or as far as 600 miles - out in PA for a group camp-out in July......we usually go back to the same old "haunts" but do try new ones when we are on the search for new and better locations.

We live in the Adirondacks so we have soooo many CG to choose from - mostly dry camping, which is what we really like. I don't think we have ever had the a/c on in the TT!

We go anywhere from 5 miles (Capital KOA), great for check outs or a quick get away, to 3 hours to the Eastern Meet and Greet in Buttonwood, PA. Most of our treks are weekends so we try for two hour max. travel time. MD, DE, and Cental PA mostly.

We keep it under 2 hours for a 2 night weekend, and prefer less than 1 hour. We rarely go closer than 40 minutes away. For vacations we'll travel farther, (ie. 10 hours to Acadia last summer, 13 hours to Charleston this coming winter), but those would be 2 week long trips. We like to try new campgrounds, but have a few favorites too. Our favorites list is getting pretty long. It's getting harder & harder to get to all the favorites in 1 season!

Except for our 1000 mi trips to Otsego Co NY to visit family, we'll most likely stay within 100 to 150 miles of home.

We rarely us the same campground twice.............except Buttonwood of course. We explore state parks and National Parks mostly with a private campground thrown in there to rattle the norm. We go both close and far, but far has to be at least a week. We reserve at least a 3-4 day weekend a month for close (less than 6 hours) and a week or so for our far trip. This coming summer will probably be Kentucky or Florida. Haven't made up our minds completely. Take Care..............Marshall & Sue

Everywhere

We travel 7 months a year and have camped in every state and Canadian province except one state. We have camped in all kinds of campgrounds. Normally we travel less than 200 miles in a day. Two years ago we made a loop of the USA and averaged 30 miles a day over seven months.

We spend the three holiday weekends at our favorite campground in north-central PA (2.5 hours from home): Our younger daughter can meet us there and we get to do some hiking and antique shopping. At least once a month, we go to state parks within 1-2 hours from home as long as they allow pets. Whenever possible, we try to get one longer trip after Labor Day (New England, Williamsburg, etc.).

We keep it under 200 miles, the furthest is the Thousand Islands. Until I can afford a better tow vehicle, I usually stay on fairly flat ground. Once we upgrade, we plan on trips around the Great Lakes and up into Maine.

Right now the Ford 1/2 ton with the max tow option is leading the choice as a combo TV and everyday commute vehicle. My five year old Chevy is not living up to expectations. I look forward to be able to travel to the Meet and Greets. Those mountains are holding me back.

We have the 16' SunLine (from 81 or 82) and don't know what would be the best TV for it. Right now we have a Dodge Grand Caravan v6 3.3 litre engine. Not the best to tow the Sunline. We towed the Sunline home with our other RV, a Dodge Xplorer-conversion with a v8 318 cubic inch engine. She pulled it without even breathing hard but we have to sell her. She wont pass inspection and the cost is prohibitive to have all the stuff replaced so she'd pass.

We do a lot of weekend camping. Out on Friday back on Sunday. Something this stretch a 3 day weekend. These CG’s are with 90 miles one way. These CG”s are mostly all state parks. And we have many favorites that we return to. The closest to us is only 20 miles from home.

We also no do several many hours away camping trips with other camper friends. The more friends we get to know, the more there are. Some of these are 500 miles one way, others 250 to 350 miles. These are generally more then the weekend camps. But not always. May take a Friday off from work to get into camp early. Most of these are new CG’s

We hope to be able to do like Honda03842, but that will take a few more years to get to that stage in life.

Happy camping where ever it takes you. Even if in your own back yard.

John
