As Homer would say, "Duh"

Have happily owned our Sunline for going on 10 years, it has been great. One item I missed on our Sunline that the Teton had was the electric/gas hot water heater. No big deal, it has worked fine on gas all these years. While I was picking up the trailer after having the roof and awning replaced I was talking to Roger the man that did the work. We were looking things over and I was taking advantage of his knowledge, subject got on the hot water heater and he said mine had an electric heating element. The part number ended in "E". Duh, boy I felt a bit stupid. All these years all I needed to do was reach down and flick the switch and "wala!" hot water. It works just fine, saving me a bit on propane.

Don't feel bad...we all have those "Duh" moments! Roger is an excellent guy with a weath of information. Having an electric hot water heater does help save on propane, especially in those cold camping months. Glad you got your Sunline back!

When we picked up our Sunline 5'ver from the dealer we were told our hot water heater was only gas. We were disappointed but figured it would be no big deal. After the first trip I started looking to see if there was a conversion kit that would allow me to run the hot water tank on electricity. I found that Hot Rod made a 300 watt conversion kit but in order to get the correct kit, I needed the model number of the hot water tank. When I went to look at the tank and get the model number I saw the following statement beside the model number "Equiped with a 1500 watt electric element. I immediately went looking for the instruction manual for our hot water tank online and found where the switch was located. I was very happy and then had the "DOH!" moment when I recalled seeing the circuit breaker on the converter marked Hot Water Tank.

Enjoy your new found switch for the electric Hot Water Tank

I too, noticed that a/c breaker marked hot water heater and didn't think any more about it. Guess it was a moment much like the 20 year professional pilot forgetting to lower the gear on landing. Duh!

My 2005 F-293SR had a seperate switch in the cluster with the tank gauges and water pump switch for water heater-gas and water heater-electric.

Maybe by this model year Sunline had figured out that the switch needed to be a little more conspicuous!

Hi Guys,

The 2004 model was a design year change for both Atwood and Sunline at least in the TT's. Atwood changed the method of doing the eletric element option to use the same controller board as the gas side along with the same T stat and ECO switch. A relay was then added in the wiring box in the back of the heater and the manul switch and controls removed.

Sunline then started putting the electric on/off switch in the area near the KIB tank monitor panel. The early 2004's has a sepreate Atwood on/switch and the later 2004's has a 3 rocker switch KIB tank panel with the heater electric rocker there.

Jeff, your 5er was a 2005 wasn't it?

Yes, it was a 2005 model year with a May 2004 build date if I remember correctly.

And I just want to say, your knowledge of the history on this particular item might give Sunline Fan a run for his money...

Ah no... he can quote the frame numbers of peoples campers.... Why he remembers the frame number from my prior T2499 is well, beyond me... Even I do not know that one even when I owned it….

I bow to the master on Sunline history, trivia, tid bits you name it…

I just happen to remember that really nice 5er of yours. I had to stop looking at it before I had another toy....

No worries, I bow to John when it comes to anything '02-'05 related. He's the master of that, especially with 2004.

Sadly, when I started getting back into Sunline more than ever, in July 2003, I built on what I already knew, and my focus was on the older stuff. So my knowledge only extends from about the model year 2000 and back. Then I took an interest in the recent 2005-07s once Sunline went out and I realized I might be able to find out a lot of info on them. So I'm not real good with anything 2001-04. Since I did focus my interest on the older ones, for a while before I started the registry, I was just looking at ads/pictures of those older ones. I can't tell you how many '01-'03 Sunlines (and no doubt with VINs too) I just skipped right over. Now I wouldn't miss a new one for anything...
