Awning

Hi gang! Great summer, even with the sometimes unbearable heat. No big deal closing up except for when I started to raise the awning. It's frozen. Wouldn't move up or down. Moved the pin that's on the right and nothing. Finally had to tear the awning cloth off the roller(was going to replace it in the spring anyways). So now I have to replace the entire awning. Anybody been through this and any recommendations? Thanks!

Could be a broken spring. There are 2 springs in the roll up tube.

Awning

Thanks, I just found this out. I also found a company that sells them for less than $100 each. Think I'll order them now , so I don't have to mess around in the spring. I thought that I was going to have to go for $1,000 for the whole deal.

Thanks for the reply!

I recently saw a 90 Saturn with a manual roll up awning. It had braces that swung out. I'd absolutely consider converting to this. Does anyone know where to find such a beast?

H'mm, many Sunlines have manual roll up awnings and braces on the sides. What year/model Sunny do you have?

Do you mean one like this? This is the somewhat newer 90's something and beyond ones

OK got it. Is the awning in the pic above the style you are looking for? That is a Dometic A & E Sunchaser 8500 series manual awning.

Here is a U tube on them from Camping World. Scroll down for the video
Dometic 8500 Patio Awnings - Dometic - RV Patio Awnings - Camping World

They sell these in many places, and sizes. I have one of the 8500 awnings and they work very well. Over time, about the 10 year mark, if the camper lives outside all the time, the fabric get sun baked and can be replaced.

A heads up, look and see if your camper has an awning gutter rail. Up on the edge of the siding by the roof would be a U shaped gutter rail the full length of the camper screwed on that has a round cord slot added to it to allow the awning rope end to slide down the rail and hold it on. If yours does not have that gutter rail or the cord slot, then you can add the gutter rail. It is extra and not part of the awning itself. Some of the older campers did not have gutter rails. I do not know what year they started adding them. Your 87 model may or may not have one.

Hope this helps

John
