re-sizing pix ???

I note in the sticky thread above Janet H has guidelines which call for pix to be <50K & 620x620 pixels.
I can't seem to learn how to downsize my pix to meet these limits ? I assume re-sizing an operation I do on my pc before attempting to post the pix? I have a program (?) called ZoomBrowser EX that came w/ camera & I think was installed in order to view my pix. It has lotsa functions inc "edit photo" but don't find a re-size option anywhere. Program offers a huge amount of info & options for each pix so I'd assume somewhere it'll allow me to shrink 'em.
Have any advice for this techno-phobe on how i can downsize my pix ? Thanx

Well there are several ways to resize photos for forum compatability. One very common method is to use a service such as http://webresizer.com/resizer/ It allows you to resize them as one of several handling options.

It's a free service so try playing with it using a practice photo. After a little experimenting I think you will see it works pretty easy, and will make photo sharing simple.

I came back an edited this posting to provide and even better resizing option which is simple to use.

Good Luck.

If you use Photobucket.com to store your online pics, resize and a bunch of other edit features are all right there. Just upload the pic, resize it, and the copy the HTML into your forum message. It's all at your fingertips in Photobucktet.

Thanx gents

I'll check out both sites to see which is easier for this pc-challenged guy
Already visited the resizer site & uploaded a pix I intend to post but didn't complete the operation as it's a good shot & don't wanna lose it. Will 1st try some "throwaways " @ both sites.
Thanx again. Hope to get an album up soon of some of our campsites last Winter in SW

If you'd rather work on your PC than online... even "free" camera software should crop a picture to a specified size and resolution. Look for a crop tool and on screen boxes to enter--usually inches or pixels--the size you want. For SOC I save 640x480 px at 72 or 96 dpi screen resolution for all but the avatar and sig and upload my correctly sized pic to Google for serving to SOC.

If all you want from an online photo account is to serve photos for online viewing it's far faster to upload these little 72 dpi pics than the mega and more mega pixels your camera is taking--especially if you don't have a fast Internet connection.

I use IrfanView. It is free and simple.
IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide

X2 Irfanview, been around for years, always been free, and is one of the best pieces of graphics software ever designed.

Between IrfanView and ScreenHunter I never have to open the "big" programs. I can use ScreenHunter to get screen captures, for free, and then use IrfanView to resize by dimensions and file size.

If It is free, it's fer me!

Thanks for the tip on IrfanView. It has all the features of the old program and a bunch of super improvements.

I'll add my stamp of approval for IrfanView!

There are plenty of programs for altering photos available, and often individuals get comfortable using a particular one and it becomes "their favorite" one. When I read the OP's plea for some help in resizing some forum pictures, I bet it was a "keep it simple please" request. I cannot imagine a more straight forward program than http://webresizer.com/resizer/ since it deals directly with this resizing need and without a pack of other functions which often can serve to confuse and frustrate. I hope we heard back from GKLarson with his opinion once he gets his photos ready to post.

Wow Bob, no need to heard back, I'm sure you're right.

gone camping

We're just now back from a # of days away camping in our Sunline (surprise!) to find all these additional replies. What a helpful group you folks are ! (As an aside, our fridge, which I'd also inquired about & received many helpful replies here, functioned flawlessly while gone so whatever caused it's previous failures remains a mystery)

GoodoleBob is right in thinking simple is better in my case.

After I get the lawn & garden caught back up (which both grew & sufferered in our absense) I'll return to resizer site, play around w/ some test pix & see if I can master the process
Thanx again for all the help

always perplexed by technology

OK. So, I go to the resizer website & apparently manage to shrink some pix, 3 of which I posted in "testing area" Forum. Newly shrunken size shown @ both resizer & after downloading back to my pc appears as 30+k, well below the 50K limit requested here. However, after uploading to "testing area" thread, 2 of the 3 pix show as 53K & 54K.
I apologize for submitting too large a pix buy don't understand how they "re-grew"

Additionally, when this pc-challenged technophobe went to "add an album" under photo tab I'm asked to supply a description ?? How's that done ? Thanx

I use MS Office Picture Manager to re-size my pictures if I'm uploading a group. If it's just one, I usually just do it in Photobucket.

A great thing with this new site software is that it automatically re-sizes pictures linked in from Photobucket, but I do seem to recall that it had to be below a certain size in order to consider an upload as an attachment to the post here.

Don't worry about the size in K. What is better is to bring them down to 640x480 pixels. All of the resize software and websites will offer 640x480 as a choice in the resize menus.

That's the one that works best in these forums. And, if you bring them down to 640x480, they will almost always be under the 50K anyway.
